Question:
HELP!!!! i killed my computer by renaming mounted devices?

Ok so recently my computer (A 2005 HP model) was infected with a host of trojans and other items that changed things in the registry and made it so no usb devices would connect to my computer or even show up in disk managment. While browsing some websites for solutions i was instructed to rename the Mounted Devices hive in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/MountedDevices i added a one at the end of the hives name and was instructed to reboot. Once I did (surprise!) I found I couldnt log in to XP as the computer froze on the blue xp welcome screen. Running in safe mode is no help as i still cant make it past the blue screen, HP's System recovery on my D drive is missing a file it apparently needs. I do have the recovery/startup discs but i dont know how to use them if i cant log in. Help me, I'm apparently a tech for not creating a backup (although i do have a recent system restore point i could use if i knew how). Also, i have been able to acces my drives (sort of) via booting XP Recovery Console in Safe mode, however i dont know what i should be doing, and when i try to access my c drive it asks for an admin password, when i enter mine it says its invalid. Please help this computer is vital to my schoolwork.

EDIT: Ok ive been looking around the web and i think i can fix it. Is there any way i could rename the filename i changed using the XP recovery console?
If so what do i need to type into the console?

thanks

you need to

use your system disc....you have an Hp you may have had to make those yourself,or they may have come with your pc it has your operating system on it XP

boot to your system disc

choose REPAIR CURRENT OPERATING SYSTEM

that should help get you back on

Then

you will need a good anti viral program really quickly there after PANDA comes to mind now you can use the trial (microsoft site)

MAKE a system repair disc using PANDA's system repair disc option

now boot to the panda repair disc it runs it's own closed source operating system and removes all known virus's spyware addware

If none of that works you will have to face it you are going to lose everything cause you need to reinstall the operating system any who good luck with that

you need to wipe your whole computer and get rid of the virus's and everything. you need put your restore disk into the cd drive then restart the computer. watch closely cuz when it restarts a black screen will probably pop up and ask you to press a key to enter recovery mode? if it does do it. the screen will only stay for a few seconds if you don't press the key quickly. on my laptop is f 11 but it could be different on yours. if you have the disk in the drive it should then guide you through the rest of the steps to formatting your drive and reinstalling windows. good luck :0)

Use your OS install disk to perform "repair".
