What's the biggest hard drive capacity that can be formatted to the FAT32 file system? I tried formatting a 250 GB HDD to FAT32 and Windows 7 said the drive is not capable of being formatted in that file system.

The limit is 8 TB; however, notice this note about that limitation on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_file_systems#cite_note-note-7-14

You could use another partitioning utility, such as Parted Magic ( http://partedmagic.com/ ) or Easus ( http://www.partition-tool.com/ ) to accomplish the task. Both of those utilities are free.

i have a reasonable inkling as to what is causing this but you made it very difficult for me to confirm this you chose to write your question as one great big long and incomprehensible sentence without any punctuation or capital letters as such i gave up reading halfway through so my only advice would be to reformat as NTFS because the fat filesystem it is already formatted as has a built in capacity limit for an individual file of just under four gigabytes and if you have any files larger than this to back up or are using a backup program that creates large archives such zip or tar files these will go over the limit and the backup will fail

I was surprised at Wikipedia saying the max capacity is 2TB (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FAT32 ), but that's with a particular cluster size.

Also, I think long file names came in with Windows 95 or 98, which knew nothing of NTFS.

Hope that helps.

Don't format the drive to FAT32 unless you really have to for some strange reason. It's really old hat and very limited. In fat32 you cannot have long names file names and you cannot set permissions or have muti users on one PC. Since Windows 2000 NTFS has been around to replace FAT32. I would format the drive to NTFS.

I think it's 137gb. Plus, the largest file size on a FAT32 volume is 4gb so remember that if you're thinking of storing huge video files etc..
