Hard drive problem! Help!?

I am fixing a external hard drive for a friend (WD Elements) and it won't format.

When I plug it in my mac it only appears in Disk Utility (not in the Finder or on desktop) and there I can't do a single thing that works; it won't let me verify or repair disk permissions, it won't let me verify or repair the disk (all grey) and when I try to format or erase it, (and I have tried it many, many times) I always get that same message: Partition(/Disk erase) failed with the error:Input/output error and not only that it says it is a 2 TB disk but it is just a 1 TB.
And when I plug it in to my PC it appears nowhere. I have tried the WD FAT32 formatter, there the drive is detected as WD but when I start the formatting I get: Error:Drive size is too small or not supported! (WDWD).
But I noticed one wierd thing: when I had WD Spindown or stop utility open the drive was detected (as WD) but when the drive started spinning, it disappeared from the list.

So please,please help me.
