click on 'start' bottom left of screen then open the control panel, click on 'system' then click the 'hardware' tab at the top then click on 'device manager' and look for an '!' next to 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers' if there isn't an '!' there just right click on it and scan for hardware changes to look for the problem.
Hope this helps.

If you're running Windows 98 you'll need drivers if your USB device is 2.0.If you're trying to run off the front USB ports try a USB port in the back that is on the motherboard itself because there may be a possibility that whoever hooked the front USB ports up didn't plug them into the USB headers on the motherboard right. The motherboard manual shows the proper way to hook them up. Make sure the header they are plugged into is actually the USB header because if someone tried plugging them onto the firewire header you could fry your motherboard plugging things into them!!

This sounds weird. First thing to do would be to disconnect all the cables, then open up the computer. Lift the case with both hands and carefully turn it so any loose screws might fall out. I think there might be something metal causing a short circuit.
Then trace the wire that goes from the reset and power button and make sure they are not loose or tangled.
Failing that you might need to replace the motherboard or the case.
Don't damage any warranty stickers if it is still under warranty. If you have home contents insurance you may be able claim for a repair or replacement by putting it down to damage by lightning or a power surge.

Your operating system (Windows) must be reinstalled in instance, your problem is a conflict between your hardware (mp3, microphone) and the opeating system (Windows). So you need a clean install before using the devices. But before installing Windows try all the USB slots to see if u get the same rection. Good Luck
