Can I install Windows 7 Ultimate on a server?

i was just wondering, cause I have been reading about how many CPUs you can have on a server and how much RAM, it would be cool to take a screen shot of the task manager showing that I have 256 cores , or over 100 GB of ram. I wonder what it would be like to have so many cpus. Would a computer never freeze?

Yes, you can install Windows 7 Ultimate on a server, but it will only work with 2 physical sockets, not 256. You would go broke trying to get a 256 server, though. And it would be insanely irresponsible of you to take a working server with 256 CPU's offline to install Windows on it. A system with that many CPU's is too expensive to have a lot of downtime. Also, systems that high-end often have very specific sub-systems that no Windows 7 drivers exists, such as fiber channel storage, so you could not possibly get Windows to start the install in the first place, because it never sees any hard drive to install to.



If a screen shot is all you want, there are ways to photoshop this and get the same result.

You could install it on a server, however i believe Windows 7 processor limitations are as follows:

2 processors - Unlimited cores.

So if the server had 4 processors, each with 4 cores - Windows 7 would only see 2 processors, so 8 subsequent cores.



For a Server, you would want a Server OS - either Windows 2008 server or, a Unix / Linux Variant.

Windows server 2008 supports any combination of CPU's and Cores up to 256.

64 physical processors each with two cores, each supporting two threads (64 x 2 x 2 = 256), as an example.
