Question:
why is my computer running slow?
2008-10-02 06:00:30 UTC
So last night I had iTunes open and I was using Internet Explorer. My laptop was running just fine, 2GB RAM, quite fast. As I was surfing the net, It blue-screened and when I restarted the laptop, it was running SLOOOOWW. Its still like that. Anybody have any idea whats wrong with it? It was running slow before and I had a tech reformat the HDD and upgrade the RAM and now it does this. Help!

The fact that you had the RAM updated and it is crashing to the blue screen makes me suspicious of that memory. If the mem modules are not matched they will tend to run together but be unstable. It may be so slow because it is really only using some and not all of your memory. There is mush that can be told from the event logs and from examination of these things. let us know if you need more help beyond this general assistance.

With your update I would be highly suspicious of spyware or virus infection. It was working fine for a month, no obvious issues with the hardware. Unless the Event Log tells us different it is time to get Spybot or your favorite Anti-Virus program on the case before it gets any worse. Also slow could be because it is so overheated it is bogging down, but that is a more distant possibility in our view

I would say about the blue screen that there must be some driver/dll/ocx or one of those files needed to recognize certain sofwares or hardwares that is corrupt or missing and in the process of trying to get it...

For the being slow i cwould say some process/es may have been initiated that run in the background but caused the laptops resources to be overused. may be if you had the process explorer software you could have seen them and what initiated them and killed them.

I sometimes just restart the machine and it jus works fine. But you can first try repairing your windows by running the OS intstallation cd. Or pause any softwares that start automaticaly eg antiviruses so as to get some resources to work while the hidden processes work.

Most computer users have been trained that if you want more speed for your computer, then add more memory. Well, this is true, in certain circumstances. But for most of the times, it really is just bad files in your registry files. Corrupted or missing registry files can make your computer too slow.

The registry is a main part of your computer's Operating System. With time, as you use Windows and install and uninstall programs, your registry will get congested and full of errors. So your computer could slow down. So, if you can clean it up this problem can be solved.Sometimes you can speed computer up by 300%. To clean up registry,You can download a software called regsitry cleaner---Clean registry, remnant, corrupt files and temp files,history,cookies,etc.. This site:

http://www.make-pc-fast.com/

lists top 5 registry cleaner, you can download and scan for free.

Good luck!

The blue screen is usually a sign of hardware/drivers issue. If you upgraded the ram recently, that could be it. The blue screen usually gives you a line at the bottom to tell you what exactly is causing the crash.

There are many factors that slows down your computer, maybe there is a virus infection is your system, the wear and tear of your computer chips like processor, RAM and motherboard can also slow down a computer, also if your system is not arrange properly. I reccomend you to scan your laptop with antivirus and you may also reformat your laptop and install a fresh copy of Operating System

Could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software. This problem can be solved by uninstalling new software, updating device drivers and making minor configuration changes . From http://fixit.in/bluescreenofdeath.html . You can also run a free registry scan using utilities from http://re7.info
