Can a TV tuner card be used to record video games?

My HP All in One computer has a built-in TV tuner card (and Hauppauge WinTV) that came with it and was originally put in to record TV shows via cable or composite hook-ups, but I was wondering if I could use it to record my PS3? The composite input (red, white, and yellow) are literally right on the front of the tower but whenever I try to record using a variety of programs, either the computer tells me "Hauppauge WinTV could not open" or the picture quality comes out really crappy and there's no sound. Are TV tuner cards and Video capture cards two different things? Would I need a capture card (PVR) to record my games?

Yes, they are two separate cards with two sets of purposes. The front A/V input on your desktop is actually indented for a stand alone tuner set-top box (comcast, motorola, ect), which can be used for Windows Media Center -- this is an alternative to the Tivo service. Microsoft can basically take control of the set-top box via IR blaster hardware -- this is very complicated to setup correctly. Many users make the assumption that the A/V inputs are for capture on a Media Center/TV tuner bundled PC.

However, certain programs can make use of this type of card for capture. If you have XP or Vista, you can try Windows Movie Maker to record.

Anything you can record with a PVR, can be recorded on the computer with a TV tuner card.

IMO as far as my knowledge I don't see any T.V. tuner card can record game.

But if you want to record games you can use this programs FRAPS, BSR Screen recorder, I Screen Recorder.

This may help you.
