You are putting in a new IDE hard disk. What actions (step by step) should you take to turn this dead disk in to a bootable one? (no OS you want the hard drive to come up to the C prompt when you are done).

Attach the IDE and power cable. Boot the computer and enter the BIOS. Look under boot priority and set it on top of the list. If you want to install an operating system by CD of DVD set the DVD player on top and the HD on Nr. 2. If after rebootig "no operating system found" is displayed download the CD or DVD version of KNOPPIX and run the computer with KNOPPIX, a free colllection of LINUX tools. You will have access to the complete data on the disk if there are any, no matter what operation system it was run before..

Download a DOS boot disk or ISO form here:
http://www.allbootdisks.com/download/dos.html
Boot to your DOS boot disk or CD.
Run FDISK and create a primary dos partition
Format the partition using the s switch (format c: /s)
Now you have a bootable DOS drive.
