Hi all, I'm having a lot of trouble freeing up hard drive space on my laptop with windows vista. I have tried several things to go about this problem. These things include uninstalling all of my games, and doing the Disk Cleanup accessory. Currently, I have 701 MB of free space, out of 222 GB. I have no idea what else I can do. Also, Vista is using memory, so I am also losing memory by the second. I have considered backing up my data and formatting my hard drive. But I was wondering if there are any more options for me. Are there? Please help me.

I would advise you to get an external hard drive ( available 1 terabyte for about $50.00)

Transfer everything to it, this will leave your Hard Drive with much more space.

Check with the Computer manufacturer, how much Ram the computer will handle, and upgrade the Ram.

As Well, if you have a computer crash, all of your stuff will be safe and accessible after recovering from a crash.

The best thing to do first is to see what is using all your hard drive so I would recomend to open

-Start

-Computer

-Local Disk (C:)

-then right click on (Windows or Program or Users)

Do it for each 3

-Propertise

Give it a few mins and it will tell you the size of each file

If it's Programs then you may have a lot of software installed

User then you have a lot of media or other items on your desktop or in your file or other accounts file

There are different things that you can do other than these:

1.Lower your window's virtual memory so it stops using up your hard drive : http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Change-the-size-of-virtual-memory

2. Defragmenting your disk may sometimes help http://www.kongtechnology.com/2008/04/26/how-to-defrag-windows-vista/

3. You can also get an extended hard drive for 100$ or so, and move some of your less used stuff there.

You can go to Control Panel, System, System Restore tab and tickmark "Turn off system restore on all drives". Click Apply, Click OK and reboot. When you log back on, repeat the steps and re-enable system restore. This process will purge older restore points.

You can also limit the amount of disk space reserved for system restore. XP reserved 15% of the hard drive by default and, presumably, Vista does the same.

For Vista, the process is more complicated than XP. See the link below:

http://vistasupport.mvps.org/decrease_storage_space-allocated_to_system_restore.htm

Don't set System Retore at 0% however as it wouldn't give you any backups if you need it.
