Is it advisable to upload or save the photos directly from the camera? If not, how else can be done?

most any image software, just make sure in the conversion you set it at no copression, if you do not uplad straight from the camers, then use a card reader, but the quality will remain the same either way

I'd rather just save the file into the computer and if important make backup copies. I prefer using a card reader for faster transfer but USB would also be fine. (USB transfer above)
Your question on how to convert the image is actually really simple. I simply just rewrote the .jpg extension to .tif, making it software free. Of course, I also used photoshop to try and convert and it included many more options to save the file. Of course, photoshop would be too much as I don't notice a differene between jpg and tif.
In order to view the extension you go to any folder (My documents, My Pictures, My computer, etc. Pick one.) > tools > Folder Options > View > Find 'Hidden Files and folders' with the two circle buttons > Look under that and uncheck it, it should say 'Hide extensions for known file types'. By unchecking it enables you to see the exteension, now you simply just rename it.

Yes of course. You can do it.
Just check the cable you got with the camera.
Insert it in the USB socket on your computer.
Insert the other side in your camera.
If its Windows XP it will automatically detect and you
will get a new disk drive like your hard disk drive in your "My Computer". Open it and you will get all the photos you captured from your camera. Or you can also put it in the camera if you want to do so.
Bye.
