So this brand new machine SHOULD have what's called a RECOVERY PARTITION - you'll have to restart the computer and look at the screen when it's first starting up. Somewhere it should say something like F6 Recovery - once you see that start tapping that key.

In the recovery menu (you may have to Google for the specific computer model to find out which key to use to get there) just pick the option to refresh Windows or do a Factory reset. Either SHOULD do the trick.

For the record Windows 8/8.1 ROCK! New PC's are built on an assembly line so on occasion one will get some goofy hardware, so if the recovery partition method doesn't cut the mustard have your pal take it back and get a new one.

On a side note and for your sanity sake, once you're in Windows for the first time after the refresh or factory reset you'll have to wait a while for some setup things. Don't restart the machine, don't try to escape out of it, just let it keep changing the screen color and doing it's thing until it's done.

Good luck and enjoy.

Hi,

Not an expert on Windows 8 (yet) ... but when this happened with "brand new" systems with prior Windows versions, it was because the Windows update was still set to go online automatically and check for updates every time the system was booted.

It may be that the system is checking for, and finding, a crapload of updates to the Windows installation, and attempting to dload them before fully starting Windows.

Try leaving the system running overnight next time You start it, and check it in the am ... You should at least then be able to get into it to modify any settings that may be causing the problem.

G'Luck!!

Congratulations, it sounds like you have Windows 8. Alt + F4 should work get you to the desktop if not I would take the machine back assuming it is Windows 8.
