You are running a Windows 98 or 98SE system and the BIOS or disk controller does not recognize drives greater than 32GB. You either need an update for your BIOS or you need to install a NEW PCI disk controller (may be both). A new controller will not have the next road block that you will run into at the 200GB drive barrier.
Next the Win98X will not address drives over 32GB without some updates and patches.

I have a Seagate 160 gb external hd and have never had problems with it. Hard drives need space to put the files necessary to run the drive properly. For my 160 gb drive, it shows 149 gb available. The other 11 gbs is taken up with the files mentioned.

It's either that you did something wrong when you partitioned it, or more than likely it's what bondoman decribes.
Older machines have hard drive size limits in their bios and to fix it you have to go to their webpage and find support on your model and download the newest bios update, create a bootable floppy, and boot up to it and flash the bios, then you'll want to re-partition that drive.
PS: That's the second or third time I've seen bondoman with a good answer on computer stuff. You must be getting away from the Bondo :)

You don't have to reformat the whole drive if you are on WinXP. Go to Start>Control Panel>Administrative tools>Computer management>Disk management and you will find the missing unpartitioned space there.
Right click it and select New partition and you'll get back your hard drive in full.
Hope it helps.

Check the jumper behind the HDD,it maybe was placed by mistake at the safe mode pins that gives only 20% of the storage.put the jumper to the primary( if you don't have any other HDD) or secondary(if you have another one).
If it still do not work properly go to ...Right click on My Compute....Click manage....on the the window that opens click disk management...you will see your HDD condition....If necessary format the disk...
Good luck

the dimensions of the not person-friendly force isn't what makes a computing device low cost, and its no longer what you may want to make your procuring decision on. more cost-effective instruments have a lot less processing power, reminiscence, smaller reflects and so on. Plus, any not person-friendly force receives complete by skill of the years, in spite of length, yet you may continually upload an exterior force for further storage by technique of merely plugging it in to a USB port. final analysis, spend you funds on the suited processor and exhibit screen exhibit you may arise with the money for and don't be disturbed a lot about the not person-friendly force.

its partitioned to 32 g/bs! what you should do is reformat the whole lot and get the entire drive active, or see if you can create another partition making up the rest of the drive, call it e: or something...

Well.. i happened to me with a 200 gb HD, do you have Windows XP service pack 2 ??? (it's free) if you don't have it you can download it at Microsoft's site. Or if you have it you could have to upgrade your BIOS.
Win XP Service Pack 2 : http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx

I bought two of those and they only give 130MB. I don't know why such a huge chunk of 30MB is missing but I haven't complained much, yet.
