I have a Sandisk Cruzer Edge 8GB flash drive. The problem is that, It has no write protect switch. And it is write protected. I have tried all the ways to disable write protecting I found over the internet, using REGEDIT and CMD, but it says the disk needs to be repaired. But when I go to repair it, It says the disk is write protected. So neither I can disable the write-protection, nor I repair it. What do I do? HELP!!!

This has been a common and long-running problem for SanDisk flash drives.  SanDisk's response is —

"I understand that you are getting write protection error while accessing your Cruzer flash drive. The flash drive has detected a potential fault and has become write protected to prevent data loss. There is no method to fix this. You will need to backup your data and replace the flash drive. Our team of developers is in combination with the OS developers looking into a solution to resolve this issue"

They claim to have been "looking into a solution" for some years now, so it is fairly obvious that no solution exists, and it is likely that SanDisk is no longer researching the problem.

See the following page to determine if the device is still under warranty.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

Try the HP Format Tool.

Write Protection is usually a sign of PERMANENT DAMAGE.

use a sandisk utility to try low level format

if that does not work, its dead.
