How to troubleshoot windows xp.?
Since yesterday it has refused to start properly. It begins the loading process, but stops before too long. It says that Windows has not been able to begin successfully, and it gives some start-up options. They are:

safe mode
safe mode with network
safe mode with command prompt
last known good configuration
starts windows normally

No matter what you choose, it begins loading but then goes to an all black screen, and windows restarts. That begins the whole process all over again.

I do not have a reformatting disk because the person who sold me the computer built it himself, and I can not reach him anymore. I was told to just install linux on to it, but how could I go about doing that when it wont starT?

i have yet to install linux and have all of my perifs work proerly. if you've been using windows for very long you will hate it.

go to www.thesoftonline.com and get a cheap version of windows, they're perfecdtly legal except you get no microsoft support.

however, i would check my hardwar before spending money to restore your pc as i have seen cses like this in which the video card is blown.

Linux is installed by setting your CD-Drive to the first boot priority. After doing so, the system will read any start-up disk before the hard-drive. Thus, any boot disks such as linux, winxp, etc, will be read first and launch into their respective setups.

My suggestion is to borrow an XP cd and simply re-install XP over the previous system files. Rather than a clean wipe, this will re-write any of the corrupted XP files with their official, original versions. You will also, most likely, be able to keep all of your files. All that will remain is the updating of drivers and the re-installation of programs.

Scan your harddrive. Boot using Windows XP CD then go to recovery console.

read : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058

Option 2, on how to load Windows XP Recovery Console using Windows XP CD.

In recovery console execute : chkdsk C: /r /p

Restart your computer after scandisk.

If you don't have Windows XP CD, get anohter computer ( or ask a friend for help ).

Unplug you harddrive, plug it to the other computer as slave, then scan your harddrive.

Also check your internal CPU for overheating.
