Yea it sukz and there isn't anyway to change it. What I do is setup a dual boot. I login to Windows XP and defrag the computer from there. The vista defrag program is like 3 times slower then the WinXP one since it uses so much ram and uses Explorer. I don't have time to let my computer run for 12 hours defraging my 2 Raid 0'ed 320GB drives (599GB visible to windows).
*edit* Here are my system specs. This computer isn't more then a month old. Yet, I still find it amazing how much vista sukz on most everything compared to WinXP.
AMD Phenom 9600+ BE 2.3Ghz
4GB Crucial Ballistix 1066Mhz
2 Seagate 320GB Raid 0/NCQ enabled
4x 3870 512MB GDDR4
Areca ARC-1231ML Raid Controller
Dual Boot Vista Home Preminum/Windows XP Pro

hi, confident it does via default. In domicile windows Vista, there are various advancements interior the defrag engine and interior the manageability of fragmentation. via default, domicile windows Vista makes use of activity Scheduler to promptly save the no longer uncomplicated disk defragmented. This automatic defragmentation does not impression the overall performance of the domicile windows Vista working equipment. The overall performance isn't affected via fact no longer uncomplicated disk defragmentation purely occurs while the laptop is idle. the activity that runs the defrag engine runs as a low-precedence activity. subsequently, defragmentation does not impression the overall performance of alternative projects that the consumer performs on the laptop. hi mate
the vista disk defragmenter runs automtically and i must agree with the other guys, this was not one of microsofts best changes to the windows os
at least with the windows xp version you could change the view so you could see the files being moved and could see how long left the defragmention had left
i have installed a 3rd party defragmenter on my vista p.c,auslogics disk defrag(http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag) is a FREE program and works with both 32bit and 64bit versions of windows vista
it has a similar interface to the windows xp version of disk defragmenter and uses very little system resources
i have this installed on both xp and vista versions of windows and have experienced no problems with it
hope this helps
good luck mate !
