ok, so my dad wiped the family computer clean, but before he did that, the saved some stuff on the external hard drive. After he cleaned the computer out, he went to access the hard drive, but it says that it has to format the hard drive is. The thing is, i dont wanna because it'll erase the stuff inside.
so is there anyway not to format this and access it still (maybe access it and move it over to another hard drive and format it?)

thanks

Listen I ALWAYS having the same problem... it's fixable though, 2 things.

1. I hope you have NDD.COM near by. Please get this.

2. get a 2nd hard drive and boot from that second hard drive, and see if it can read the one you having problems with.

If not you will need to use NDD.COM, it's like scandisk BUT 20 times stronger, it won't delete anything it just fixes the boot record, that's why you having problems reading it.

It's cool though, don't worry.

If your computer has an AMD CPU, and Viatech USB Host Controllers; changing the USB Host Controller drivers to standard or generic drivers, may work. Sometimes, putting a line in config.sys, helps. ie. "lastdrive=m"
