I saw your question and instantly knew i had to help. I was having this problem as well, i didnt know what to buy....so i went to Best Buy and looked at the memory configurator and it helped me out a lot. Go to the webpage in my source (it has all of the ram that best buy sells that works for YOUR computer) and try all of the ram there. My suggestion is the 1GB ddr2 ram from kingston technologies.... that is the one I bought for my computer. It works very well, and it is very fast. It also is on sale for only $80.

The first link is for your computer information,

The second link is just best buy's website

The third link is the ram that i recommended for you.

I hope this helps, and i wish you good luck getting the ram you'd like.

Oh, as for the part about not having enough room to put in another stick of ram, just try the new ram alone, and make sure it works, then try the new ram with one stick of old ram at the same time.... if that doesnt work then just sell the two 256 MBs on ebay.

about the variety, the major reason behind 1 is toughness (through the indisputable fact that's a organization laptop designed for reliability and toughness), even though it also provides different organization valuable homes like a matte show and docking station. Latitudes are outfitted more durable than different Dells (and is the reason their critically larger value) and the more advantageous positive ones (more moderen E5420/E5520 and the E6xxx line) have a magnesium alloy casing. once you're out on the line plenty or abuse your laptop, it really is noticeably important. in the different case, you need to purchase a plastic Inspiron with similar specifications for critically more affordable, even though it gained't very last everywhere close to as lengthy. in case you could push the specifications, opt for a spread E5520. The E5510 continues to be sturdier than the different ones, notwithstanding it don't have magnesium alloy. What you're doing would not require that solid of a pix card. An integrated one is high-quality except you do heavy three-D gaming or CAD modeling. I really have a spread E6410 via ways and it really is an outstanding and good laptop.

unless you are going to be using a lot of graphics programs or going to vista, 2 512mb dimms are probably all you need. if you are into photoshop and the like, than get 2 1gb sticks. and really go to town, don't go any more, xp can't really use it.
