hi guys
over the last few months i have been experiencing odd audio problems with my onboard realtek ac-97 sound device
every so often the sound will go,however not all of the sound,if i access the relatek soundmanager and test the speakers they are fine, also all the music and games will have sound
however basic sound such as the windows xp start up tune and basic windows sounds such as alerts and warnings cannot be heard
i can fix the problem by a simple "system restore" however i would rather not continue to carry out these for obvious reasons
my questions are :
1.what is causing the windows sounds to dissapear, its not a driver issue as the ac-97 driver is the latest one
2.could software cause this,i had installed several music creation programs just before the windows sounds dissapeared(mixcraft 4.0 / magix music maker basic)
i know i can still play games and listen to music, watch videos ect however i am just stumped why this is happening
any help will be much appreciated !
cheers guys!

solution:

Go to my computer's properties then click on hardware tab then device manager .here you will see all the installed drivers on your computer.the driver which are not properly installed or not installed will be marked by yellow color.simply double click on that then there will be option of reinstall driver , simply click on that it will find the driver automatically or download form the internet.then it will be done

or

1.firstly move to control panel then sounds and audio device now click on tab named as sounds.

here you can see various windows sounds.single click on them one by one then click on play button's icon present over there. Then you can hear the windows sound if not then move to next step...

2.if solution 1 does not work, then install vista insprint (incase if your window is xp),then reboot your system.this time surely you will hear the windows sound working well (all the starting, logging off, error sounds). Now

1) if you like the vista insprint then do not uninstall it(as it does not consume your extra RAM memory as in case of vista transformation pack) and enjoy your window sounds working well otherwise

2) uninstall it , now reboot your system now see that whether windows your sounds are working well or not.if they are not working again then then it will be clear that your previous window sounds have been corrupted.

now for this

1). you can simply insert your window's cd and boot form it and repair your windows .no data will be lost in repairing and you have not to install the drivers again and the all installed programs.

2) otherwise you can simply restore your computer to the earlier date when no such problem was comming.

i hope!!!!!!! it will help......

Have updated your realtek drivers. Go to their web site and take a look, sometimes you have to readjust the drivers when you change anything in your computer.
